Scientists Want To Store Genetic Code of 1.5 Million Animals, Plants, and Fungi
24 scientists from around the world hope to collect and store the genetic code of 1.5 million known plants, fungi, and animals throughout the next decade. Scientists could use the library of life to find more out about how species evolved along with how they might improve the environment. The project is said to be the most ambitious in the history of modern biology and will cost £3.4 billion.
The project is named the BioGenome Project and is led by researchers at the Smithsonian Institution. Researchers have said that by cataloging the DNA of every species on Earth, it will prove to be a vital resource for innovations in many areas, including conservation, medicine, and agriculture. John Kress from the Smithsonian Institution said that they wanted to build a library of life that was complete. This library could then be sampled and delved into for whatever reason it was needed.
Human Genome Project Was First Decoding of Human Genome
Kress said that it could be used to improve the environment and human beings along with revolutionizing the understanding of how life evolved. The first ever decoding of a human genome was in 2003, and this was one part of the Human Genome Project costing £2.15 billion and took 15 years to complete. This project made a huge impact on human medicine and experts have said that benefited financially to the tune of almost $1 trillion to the economy in the US.
Researchers say that the BioGenome project might lead to far greater opportunities. It might help researchers to increase the understanding of the biodiversity of the Earth and responsibly stewarding the resources is one of the crucial social and scientific challenges. Kress published a paper in the “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences”.
Project Will Give Information about Issues Humanity is facing
Researchers have said that the outcome would provide information about many big issues that humanity is facing, including how biodiversity is impacted by climate change. Also, conservation of ecosystems, endangered species, enhancement, and preservation of ecosystem services.

Scientists are of the belief that by the end of the century, over half of the species could become extinct and the consequences to humans are unknown but may be catastrophic said Harris Lewin from the University of California. The assembly of all species is going to be an undertaking that is huge.
